ProPublica - Law and Disorder
Law and Disorder is a groundbreaking project by ProPublica, the New Orleans Times-Picayune and Frontline investigating allegations that high-ranking New Orleans police commanders gave orders after Hurricane Katrina authorizing officers to shoot civilians perceived as looters.
ProPublica asked us to design a "deep-dive" site that allows journalists and editors to easily add new facts as the joint investigation continues to develop. We created a three column structure that focuses readers on the latest news and provides space for case files and resources. This proved effective as the FBI re-opened their investigation into the shootings a few months after the site launched, resulting in a number of follow up stories by reporters.
A key element of the site is a global timeline that puts the facts of the case into context within the events of the Katrina disaster. The timeline also acts as a navigation tool that links specific reports to overall cases within the ongoing investigation.
